Tavolo, Tavola
Kira Crugnale's Tavolo, Tavola invites us to the table to explore its dual role as both functional object and essential site of human connection. The Italian title underscores this distinction: tavolo, the masculine, denotes the table as object, while tavola, the feminine, signifies a table activated by ritual and gathering.
Shot over four years, the work reflects the photographer’s ongoing interest in communal space, cultural inheritance, and emotional presence. Seemingly impersonal at a glance, Crugnale’s photographs blend snapshot-like intimacy with formal structure, creating a tension between familiarity and distance, shaped by the artist’s own Italian-Canadian heritage.
